Northern Lights on the Hawaiian Shores: Native Christianity in Alaska

An evening with Fr. Michael Oleksa

Tuesday, June 7th, 6:30 pm

The Orthodox Church is the second largest and the oldest Christian Church in the world. It is the church of Russia, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Egypt, Ukraine and many other countries around the world, and has a long history here in Hawaii.

But many are surprised to learn that Orthodox Christianity is the NATIVE church of Alaska, especially among the Aleut, Yupik and Tlingit peoples. The native peoples of Alaska have adopted the Orthodox faith over the last two hundred years into every aspect of their culture and native life. Father Oleksa, an expert in Alaskan history and native spirituality, will share the experience of the Alaskans, how the Orthodox Church became their own church, and what lessons the Alaskan Christians and saints have for us in Hawaii.
